After working so hard to find the perfect gift at the right price, you find yourself in the wrapping department to find the gift bag, paper and card.  Then you realize that you’ve just spent another 10 dollars that wasn’t part of the original plan.  It’s the perfect card and the cutest bag, but you can’t seem to avoid that voice talking to you in the back of your head, lecturing about money and budgets!  People love a wonderfully wrapped present, but if you use less expensive wrapping are they really going to notice or care?  Chances are very good you are not going to devalue your amazing gift by using less expensive wrapping.

Greeting cards – Are expensive!  I was looking for a father’s day card last June, I thought I had found the perfect one, but when I turned the card over, I saw that it was whopping 8 dollars!!! I thought, ”but, its prefect”. Then I thought my dad, king of cheap, would be disappointed that his daughter spent 8 dollars on a card!  I searched a bit harder and found another card I loved just as much for 3!

5 Ways to Save Money on Greeting Cards & Gift Wrap

1. Look out for coupons
.  Check Cartwheel (Target) or your local store coupon app for greeting card coupons.  Usually there is a discount on three at a time.  Consider buying enough for the next couple months to save time and when that birthday rolls around, you will be ready!

2. Check the dollar store or a store that charges generally a dollar.  Think ahead, make one trip for a couple months of cards!  It doesn't help to make a special trip for every event!  I have found some cute and absolutely perfect cards at these stores!  Truthfully, you make the card special by what you write inside of it! Share a joke, sincere comments or Google will happily help you out if you aren’t excellent with words!

3.
Consider creating your own greeting card online, you can print it or send it as an email.  Use Greetings Island to create a lovely card to send to a friend!

4. Buy in bulk.
I always feel that that just sending a birthday card to your dearest friends on their birthday can make their day brighter.  It beats a Facebook post.  Amazon has some amazing sets of birthdaycards.  I’d only recommend buying one years’ worth of bulk cards.  I almost bought a Father’s day set this year to realize that I would have three years of cards laying around the house. I’m not interested in the keeping that much stuff around to cause clutter!

This is true for gift wrap as well!  If wrapping in bags is your signature wrapping, purchase a large quantity of gift bags for any occasion  Like this bulk collection of bright colored bags.  Save the pink for the girls in your life.  Blue is great for the men and use green with some red tissue paper around the holidays! Have fun with some colorful tissue paper mix it up, and you’ll have something for everyone!

5. Wrap your presents with paper as opposed to bags.  A gift bag and paper can add up to a few dollars, but you can purchase a roll of paper for the same price and use it for multiple gifts.  Search the dollar store for ribbon and gift paper!   If you really feel like you can’t afford wrapping, when you stop at the grocery store, ask for brown paper bags. Use the blank inside of the brown bag to wrap gifts!  Also, consider keeping only brown shipping paper, this will keep clutter from collecting in your house!  You can dress the gift up from there!    If you aren’t confident that your wrapping skills will get a passing score, learn to make pretty ribbons … no one will notice!  Check out these YouTube videos on making an easy bow or a double ribbon bow!

Now that you’ve learned a few easy ways to save money on gift wrap and greeting cards, go out there and give it a try! Once you’ve tried to go the less expensive route, you will never go back to buying expensive gift bags and 8 dollar greeting cards!  Spend more on the gift, add to your savings fund, pay off more debt and keep focused on your money saving goals!

What are some inexpensive wrapping have you used in the past?  Do you have any cost effective creative wrapping ideas?
